This is Joost 'The Boost' Wichman's GoPro from the start this year. I'd qualified 4th in my heat, so was on the 2nd row, to the right, with the black jersey and blue shorts in the video. Joost Wichman is a really nice bloke as well. Had a chat with him in the lift up to the start.

I was rubbish on the snow ( as you can see), but made up loads of places on the meadow and fire road climb before the 'The Mud' claimed me. I've never ridden anything like it. Wheels stopped turning, whole rear ends and froks were clogged up and bikes were too heavy to carry. My chain and chain device got smashed off in the mud, so I rode the rest with the wrong foot forward and no chain. Still cut some people up with overtakes on the insides of corners though. Twisted Evil

Awesome Pete, I have seen a couple of videos of this but didn't realise that you were competing!

Must have been bonkers Laughing

It was a bit wild. I went down the whole first snow descent sideways with full opposite lock and the 2nd even steeper one I let off the brakes and went feet up, only to get tankslapped in the softer snow at the bottom.

I don't think I've ever been more scared than I was waiting for the start to come round or riding the snow.

Brilliant, Its something I am planning to do in the next 3 year hopefully. once in a lifetime event/race.

Albeit being sh*t scary, its got to be also hilarious sliding down the mountain with everybody wiping each other out? In all honesty I bet its brown trousers the whole way down haha.

Well done on the qualifying btw. One question though, how the hell do you go about choosing a tyre that'll be any good on all those different conditions? Guess it's a case of compromise Laughing

It really is a compromise. In the end, I went for a Maxxis Shorty (not out in 27.5" yet) on the front and a 2.4 HR2 on the rear, but something lower volume would have been better for more mud clearance. Another rider on the same team as me (Martyn Brookes) was running 2.3 HR2s front and rear. It obviously worked for him, as he came 5th overall. If I was to do it again in the same conditions, then I would use 26" wheels with Maxxis Wetscreams front and rear, in the 27.5" frame.

This was my 2nd year racing it, and I'm not sure about next year. I might do it again next, but I equally might just go out to the Alps and ride or do an EWS round instead. I'm not sure yet.

Well done fella. Didn't know you were competing. Watched that video the other day. Great perspective of the carnage.
