Anyone had this problem?

I am getting a creak from the crank/b/b under peddling.

I fitted a new bottom bracket 6 month's a go and a gradual creek has developed, I have checked the exterior bolts and they are tight also I did lock-tite them.

Any suggestions, also should you lock-tite them? Its a older xt with out external bearings.

Cheers

Greg

Should be no need to lock tite them Greg if you nip them up properly Shocked

Is it a sealed cartridge you have fitted, or a bottom bracket with cup and cone races.

One very important thing about creak noises from the bottom bracket is that they are very often caused somewhere else on the bike and the sound is amplified from the bracket area or they come from an area that makes it sound very much like it is the bottom bracket that is at fault.

The problem is made very difficult as it only happens under pedal pressure, and noise from the drive train/rear wheel/pedals all travel to the bracket via the frame.

For example I had a very similiar problem only a year ago on my Sirrus and had the bracket changed by Biketraks after trying to exclude everything else..........

Result..........noise still there.

Fortunately my back wheel went 2 month later after hitting a huge pothole and it was cheaper to buy a new set of wheels rather than rebuilding that one........

Result.........creaking/cracking noise from bottom bracket dissappeared Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Gunner,

Its a sealed b/b, the wheels are 4 month old hand built on XT hubs.

The peddles are old dont but have too much play on them. I only other things it could be is the frame bushes, but no noise when you bounce up and down? I thougth it may be the b/b was a bit loose.

Dont know but it irritating

Cheers

Greg

Greg, sometimes you get a bit of crap dropping down the seat-tube and collecting around your bottom bracket - it may be that you need to drop it out and give it a clean and re-grease.

Also try a bit of random WD40 spraying around any suspension brackets (not sure what you're riding, but my bike creaks around the quad link sometimes)

Is your bottom bracket a Hollowtech II design? If it is, then you'll help it by striping and cleaning.

Best of luck - nothing worse than a creaking bike (apart from squealing brakes Evil or Very Mad )

Cheers Dave, its a 05 stumpy 120 fsr.

I am not sure if its a hollowtech II, I dont think so, it has bolts on each side of the crank arm ie you carnt look all the way through it, if that makes sence.

Cheers

Greg

Not a hollowtech II Greg - I'd drop it out and slap on some grease - including the crankarms when you put them back on. Sounds like a dry joint to me.
