Hi,

I generally just tip a couple of bottles of lucazade sport, or asda's own make into my camelbak, not sure if you really notice them working Laughing , some of the gels on the market are suppose to be quite good.

I use SIS and started to use the SIS Go-Bar, very good. Available in Tesco or Asda. http://www.scienceinsport.com/

Gouldy, re your wanting advice on energy drinks, I would be tempted to look at;

why you felt you needed an energy drink?

what are your riding/training objectives?

What are your current energy levels like?

I notice you say you perspire a lot, surely water, plain and simple would re-hydrate you adequately?

What sort of B.M.I. are you and what sort of intensity would say you are riding at.

I queery the need for energy drinks for the majority of "recreational" riders, and see anybody with a average B.M.I. as carrying adequate "fuel".

The only time I see this as changing is when the rider is upping the pace substantially and the body can not convert naturally stored energy at a quick enough pace.

I'm gonna go with Agman on this one as I use SIS as well and I swear by them...PSP22 energy drink about 30 - 45 mins before ride and SIS Go electrolyte during and straight after with a protein shake when I get home.

And you can get handy sachets of them for £1 which will make a 500ml drink!!

If you perspire a lot, then you would need to replace them lost salts. Otherwise cramp in the old legs.

I hear what you say Agman, but surely you would want an electrolyte drink then rather than a energy drink, if you are looking at replacing lost minerals and re-hydrating?

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on specialist electrolyte drinks an easy method is to make up a bottle of your fave fruit juice and add a little bit of salt!!.

Never tried it myself but I know people who have (got a couple of mates in the forces!) and they said it is a bit hit and miss on the exact quantities of salt to use so it's all down to trial and error!

My whole argument against energy drinks hinges on the fact that they are to some extent what they claim to be, yet tend to provide us with nothing that we really need!!

An average 380ml energy drink will claim somewhere around the 270-320 calories mark.

The average rider will be carrying some degree of bodyfat, and will have eaten relatively near to his planned ride, plus he will not have starved recently or be diabetic so that his liver will be storing energy for immediate use. The average rider will also not be riding near or at maximal or anaerobic levels for more than a small time during his ride, it is unlikely that the same rider will be riding for over 4 hours.
Therefore the same rider should have no problem relying on his metabolism to provide the necessary energy to feed his requirements.

An analogy;

The overweight lady goes on the jogger machine at the gym, she walks at a briskish pace but does not break into a jog, all the while she sips at her energy drink. The jogger machine tells her that after her 20 minutes she has expended 210 calories, she fails to notice on the label of the bottle she throws in the bin that the 380ml drink she has just consumed contained 285 calories.

I'm sure we all would benefit from being a little leaner on the bike Wink

Yup see where ya coming from there Gunner a very valid point. Think I'll start just having an energy drink before a ride and water during see if there's any difference!
