Hello all, been a while since I posted, but bought another new (well new to me!) bike today. I had one of these as a teenager, and had half an eye on eBay looking for on for the last couple of years. I've finally found one though...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/falcon-team-banana-/181448528574?ssPageName= STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=F3vM7YL8ioo4MFggd IWvhmImDJU%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

and it arrived today.

Needs a bit of work, wheels aren't too bad, but could do with some attention, brakes are diabolical, and the tension spring is not attached to the rear mech, but with a little work and hopefully not too much ££££ should be a good winter miles bike.

I haven't had a road bike since my last one of these (1999 when it got nicked!), so was looking for advice on what parts to use, not too fussed about performance or upgrades, just looking for compatibility and reliability.

That looks like a nice restoration project.

My boyhood dream was also a Falcon but a Falcon Professional circa 1966. I remember the date as I was actually drooling over a Falcon catalogue on the day that England won the World Cup. Cool

That brings back some good memories. I had a new Falcon team banana when I was 16/17 and enjoyed all my miles on it. You dont see too many of them around today, although Ive seen a few of the Raleigh team bananas lately.

Took it out once in the wet, was great riding round Malven until I tried to come down the hill, its still on the original brake blocks and they are utterly useless at 30mph soaking wet!

Does anyone know if I can bolt on a Shimano 105 groupset and some Mavic Aksium wheels?

Can't answer your question I'm afraid, but have been taken back many years by your comments regarding braking in the wet on these bikes.

It was very, very much a case of having to anticipate any kind of need to stop in the wet with these blocks and wheels, no such thing as an emergency stop in the wet.

Glad those days have gone for me.
