Toying with the idea of another route in Guisborough Woods for the next Forum Ride, early/mid Feb.

Looking at Sunday morning again, ideally 0830 start.

Route would be

Visitors Centre........Bousdale Woods.........Hutton Lowcross Woods........head for Highcliffe Nab......follow Tees Link onto the Moor.........across Codhill Heights down to Sleddale......up to Percy Rigg and turn right onto road.....at the gate swing left onto the footpath Embarassed Embarassed follow the path across Great Ayton Moor then swing right to follow the track with the wall on our left 'till we reach the gate on Newton Moor..........Swing right here heading back to the woods towards the Hanging Stone, nice descent then back through the woods on trails already ridden to the start.

Hope to post a map up later.

Kept this ride shortish due to the time of year and possible bad weather, and mainly on wider trails to help keep the group together.

Also some nice steady, fitness building climbs on this route.

What'dya think Question

Will post date and confirmed route map soon Wink

I'm up for it..the usual circumstances apply (wife, work etc etc) I've had a taste of proper MTB'ing and as I'm kickstarting my cycle training properly next week it wouldn't hurt to do a little bit more to get me fitness up would it?

Only difference being I know what to expect from now on so I'll pace my self from the outset and try not to be a hero and keep up with the front runners. If I'm at the back all the way I won't be bothered as long as I give it my all and enjoy it Wink after a while I'll be up there!

Need to work on me climbing anyway Rolling Eyes

Ideally 08.30 start!!! Ouch.

It's a nice route but the biggest problem will be taking a large group of bikes across a long stretch of footpath - you can get away with it to some extent if there's only one or two but it probably doesn't do mtbing too many favours if you meet a bunch of walkers.

I'm not sure what the alternative would be though..... I'll have a think. The rest's generally on reasonably solid ground so should be reasonably easy riding - not too much mud!

Matt, I know what you mean, and I'm not justifying abusing rights of way, but that footpath is wide, and is/has been used by MTBer's on a very regular basis for a long time now.

The only alternative I can think of that is reasonable, is to drop down through Lonsdale as we did on Sunday, up the tarmac climb then through the forest on the fire roads to come out just below the Monument on the main track, then down to Gribdale car park and up the other side, but we still have the footpath with the wall on our left to contend with.

I was toying with the original route format so that we could do all the main climbing/descending on the drier forest tracks, then once out onto the Moor above Sleddale we are staying at roughly the same elevation. My thoughts were that would help keep the group together more, so benefitting the less fit and less waiting times for more experienced riders.

February is a pretty crap month weatherwise and rather unpredictable so |I thought a relatively shorter ride but a bit more intense perhaps, and at the same time introducing any new riders to a different part of the Woods/Moor.

Any thoughts anybody.

Wink

Start time can be flexible Matt, if it's a major problem, but I'm afraid no later than 0930 for me as I have domestic problems, which is why I have to cut and run as soon as the ride is over.

0900 sound any better, or is 0830 O.K.

Question Question
