I have an old raleigh mtb with shimano screw on freewheel cup cone bearings and solid hub .I had to replace the bearings in rear hub. After adjusting the new bearings when I put the wheel back in the frame and tighten it up the bearings tighten up as well.I'm pretty sure I haven't left any bits out! Any advice appreciated

Have you tightened the cone nuts up properly before installing the wheel into the frame. If the cone nuts are properly tightened they should prevent the bearings being compressed when nipping up the axle bolt.

I thought I had.I also noticed that for some reason the actual cassette was locking and causing the chain to go slack when I backpedaled
