With all this riding I'm doing to and from work (Boathouse lane) I am now starting to see real results.

I try to go different routes (to stop me getting bored) but there are 3 that I mostly use:

1) Direct route. Straight down Durham Rd (Stockton) first time this way took 14 mins going and 19 coming back

2) Via Junction Rd, Norton and through Stockton town the first time I did this ride 2 weeks after I got my roadie it took me 19 mins going and 22 mins coming back.

3) Through Bishopsgarth, Rimswell, Fairfield then up through Oxbridge first time I did this took me 20 mins going 23 coming back.

That was when I first got my roadie in Oct '07(add 4 - 5 mins for MTB) now the times are like this:

1) Going 10 - 11 mins, back 15 - 16 mins

2) Going 16 - 17 mins, back 18 - 19 mins

3) Going 16 - 18 mins, back 17 - 19 mins

If you ever need proof that something is working this is it. I feel really positive about my commute rides now and use them as a tool to improve my fitness and now I'm using a HRM I can monitor my progress that way too.

I can see the benefits in other ways too but the main one is my blood pressure has dropped like a rock (something I had a problem with in the past). Did I forget to mention I used to smoke!!! Gave up 3 years ago! Wink

Pleased to hear you given up the dreaded weed, I packed up 28 years age and reckon in that time saved about £25.000. Also I was a 6 pints a night man every week, now lucky to drink a couple of pints in a week.

Why not try the Junction road - A19 bike path down to Portrack Lane - Barrage - Bridge road. That's the way I go to work to Portrack Lane, only takes me 15 mins on road bike.

Probably talking about 7 miles going there and 4 miles return home via Stockton Centre/Durham Road.. Some good extra training in the Summer months. Most of the route is traffic free.

Well I tried a variation of the route you said AM...here goes:-

Out of boathouse lane right over Victoria bridge and into Teesdale, round the back of Tfm past the Dubliner and on to the main road up towards the barrage (did a bit of sprinting along here and managed 48Kmh (30 Mph)) any way, over the barrage to pick up the cylepath behind the Talpore that brings you out at Asda, Straight over the roundabout towards the prison to pick the bike track (NCN1) back up at Holme house. Followed that to the top of Albany Road and onto South Rd. Into Norton High st onto Junction road and home.

Total time:- 25.16 minutes
Top Speed:- 48.8 Kmh (30 Mph)
Av Speed :- 25 Kmh
Distance :- 6 miles approx

Tried a similar route the night before (Friday 15th Feb) and it took 28 minutes...what a difference 24 hrs can make!!! Laughing gives me something to build on anyway.

Just a little note I topped out at 48 Kmh in 8th gear (the bike has 16) @ a cadence of 120!! Shocked

Not bad for a fat bloke eh! Wink

Hi Denny.

Dont get me wrong - smoking is a terrible thing! I smoke daily and lets just say not tobacco. although that doesn't stop me being fit although I could be fitter)- My average time trial time for a 10m loop on quite a harsh circuit is 24mins approx although I have had under 22 before with good conditions! - I ride 5 times a week to a strict training plan and for example did a 76mile endurance ride this weekend! I'll end it with smoking doesnt make you unfit!

Hi pedaller although it doesn't make you unfit it does reduce lung capacity considerably......big up on the TT times and the endurance ride though!!!

Just a little note, the Tees Barrage route now takes me, on average, 18 - 20 minutes to complete depending on conditions, how knackered I am (I'm sometimes up for work @0230) so it's coming down slowly...if I can get it to 15 - 18 minutes I'll be happy as a pig in s**t.

To add The Durham Rd. route home is taking me between 14.15 and 14.50 minutes with speeds of 30 mph being recorded (on the downhill sections!!!!). I did record a 10.18 going this route the other day but had to dismiss it as I had a tailwind!!!! still recorded in my diary though!!!

i think I know what you mean... I met up with some old friends the other day and despite being much quicker and stronger than them i noticed I was much more out of breath compared to them.

Sounds like you're doing really well with the commute - just watch out for the traffic if there's any on your route!
