Hi,
For a while now my bike is making an awful crunching noise when I'm peddling hard. The noise is always there but seems worse if I'm putting a lot of pressure on the pedals.

I'm guessing that there's a problem with the crank but I'd appreciate some advice on how I find the cause of the problem and if it is the crank, is it an easy part to fix / replace?

Cheers

Mungo

If you can give us some more details as to what bike and BB/crank your running then we should be able to help more.

And welcome to the forum.

Are you sure it's not the pedals first, before you go messing about with crank. Could be the bearings in the pedals have gone.

Couldn't you borrow a pair to swap and have a test ride.

Different pedals+no noise=problem sorted.

Also, does the noise occur when you stand up and pedal or is it just when seated.

Again, if it's making an awful crunching noise when you pedal hard, I'd be surprised if it wasn't making some noise when you just rotate the crank or pedals or at least feel "rough" in one of these areas. Do it with the bike stationary and have a good listen/feel.

Yeah I suppose it could be the pedals (hopefully!) - I'll try swapping them with another pair and let you know how I get on.

Thanks for the advice.

Cheers

Full sus bikes sometimes produce lots of horrible noises from pivots and bearings which are hard to track down.
As above I've chased creaks all over and found the pedals to be the problem. After that it's bottom bracket and also check the frame for any cracks, especially around the welds at the BB shell.

Might sound silly but what state is your chain in ?

If its not had a run out or a clean in while, the chain can make some awful noises when you put the pedal down.

I tried some new chain lube not so long back, the waxy kind, it made my chain make a right racket, so much so that I thought it was the bottom bracket and stripped everything down, a good clean of the chain did the job in the end.

Good thinking - my chain hasn't had a good clean in ages. I'll give that a go first and see what happens.

I'll post what I find after I've done the work.

Cheers

Hi Mungo and welcome too the forum..

Is there any play when you move the pedals side too side from the BB?

Ok, well I've checked the pedals and they seem fine - no play in the etc. I'm stripping the bike down tomorrow so hopefully it's just in need of a very good clean. I'll post the results. Cheers - Mungo

Mungo, how did you get on?

I had the same with shimano octalink. Try changing the tightness of the crank/bb studs, and see if this changes the noise. If so, there's your answer!

I'm giving in and taking it to my local mtb dealer for a good service and repair. I thought I might as well as the rear wheel needs straightened as well as finding a cure for the crunching noise.

I'll post the results of the service ASAP.

Cheers
