Yo people,

I am currently weighing up whether or not to aim for an External BB chain set or not? If i go for one, is BB facing absolutely necessary as i don't have a LBS where i live and i dont want to spend a fortune posting frames or an even bigger fortune buying a tool. I cannot believe the price of them!!

I was going to make one out of an old BB cartridge and some 6 flute slot drills but decided its too much effort for what i will gain.

Does anybody have any input on the subject?

Also looking for a semi decent, cheap, unwanted HT2 or GXP (pref GXP as i am an SRAM man) set of crank arms and BB if anybody has such a thing?

Cheers
Mini

I've converted several bikes to external BB and haven't faced or chased any of them.

As regards chasing the threads, a squirt of WD40 and wind the cups in by hand, if they get stuck wind them in a bit with the spanner then back it off and repeat till they can be wound all the way in by hand (you may need to apply more lube)

Most bb's are a lot better in terms of tolerance than they used to be, i wouldnt worry about it too much.

External bearings never last anyway.

Daz, facing is just when some of the BB shell (or head tube) is removed using a facing tool to give a smooth flat finish so that the BB or headset sits right Smile

It's about getting the faces square, if the frame is made properly they should already be square so it shouldn't need facing.....

Cool. Cheers guys. Well just got myself a GXP chain set so I guess we will see. Do you reckon it would be safe to assume that my frame, being new in 2010, the faces should be square anyways? Like I say. Too much fuss to get it faced if its not particularly worth it. Lol.

Cheers
