i've got a stiff cyclinder, can anyone help?? - hope dh4

i've been donated a disc brake from my bruv but i think it's been sitting in the shed too long as it's all siezed up.
i've managed to get the spring back into the lever but the cylinders seem to be stuck in and there's nothing to get a grip on to pull them out.
any suggestions?

i've never bled a hydrolic brake on a bike before but i've heard there's a kit u can use for pumping the fluid through, might that help free up the cyclinders if i increase the pressure?

it's a hope dh04 by the way.

Bleeding the brakes on an MTB aint much different from doing it on a car. As for the seized calipers if you can't do it easily (by easily I mean without the use of a hammer) then I would seriously think about replacing them. A bit of time spent on them may free them up but the pistons might need a bit of attention when you get them free to get rid of all the rust etc so they can function properly.

I would tackle it by filling a small jug with a good "freeing" oil, something like PLUSGAS, or the like and letting the parts sit in that for a few days, take them out, brush them down, clean them up, try them, stick them in again and repeat, depending upon how badly rusted they are.

Apart from that, letting the lubricant get in and do its job, I don't think there's much else you can do.

Do you want to fork out on a bit of kit to pump fluid through that may or MAY NOT free the pistons, I'd personally go for the "NOT" if the "freeing oil" didn't work Wink

can't believe i didn't think of even trying the same stuff i used on the lever to try n free them d'oh!

i've just squirted a load in and around, will leave it over night and see what happens...
if nothing i'll try soaking it in the stuff

......hmm... just a thought...

would it couse more damage than good if i squirted a load of lubricant down the hose to try n free it up from the back - like if i was bleeding it, then flush it all out before refilling fith brake fluid?

I wouldn't have thought so...if, like you say, you give the tubes a good flush out.

I can get my hands on some big syringes and plastic tubing if people want to make their own flushing kit.
