Been back today for a look around the local area - the place is like Basra. Spent about 15 mines riding around and in that time seen a couple of young like riding bikes that looked beyond their means (cannondale and a marin) Found ut home insurance can cover me £500 minus £100 excess. The head of the school is an extremely helpful lady and his given me details of their insurers and now I am going to see what they say. Wish me luck!

Hi mate I am around that area practicaly every night I will keep my out for you and contact you if I happen to see them.

My friend had his stolen too, and although it was not worth anywhere near as much it's still very very gutting.

I heard about it as soon as they were stolen (know someone who works there as a dinner nanny) and when they said they broke the fence I was very shocked!

I see you have never been to Basra. Wink

Take my word for it, the place is worse, hard to beleive I know in 21st century Britain, but there again, look how tactful they were in getting your bike.

And if you see the bike being ridden by anyone around there, I would not risk approaching them if I were you, kids as young as 7 are carrying knives round there, and they are most certainly not afraid of using them.

We should get the little ones in primary school, tape their eyelids open and force them to watch Eden Lake.

With maybe some kind of psycoactive susbstance involved too.

This is really gutting to see. The depth that these scum will go to just to get something for another fix. I hope you have some luck in getting the bikes back.

All this has got me thinking about my bike security at home. The bikes are chained together, but I think I need something more. I have been looking at these :-

http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=928476 1&fh_view_size=150&fh_start_index=0&fh_sort_order=-1&fh_sort_by=_price _rrp_min&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB&fh_search=ALARM&fh_eds=%C 3%9F&fh_refview=search&ts=1245068001401&isSearch=true

Anyone used similar and if so are they any good? I am also looking at putting in a ground anchor and getting a chain more resistant to bolt croppers and the likes. Anyone got recommendations on these?

just heard from ym boss today, that I can get £400 off cycle to work scheme, while this is nowhere near enough to replace my bike perhaps it could be used to buy few bike parts.
Contacted the schools insurer - he reckons I won't get a penny, but I'm still going to try - There were cameras and a sign saying "CCTV protection for your security and protection" And as they were disconnected I'm wondering if this is a loophole. Fingers crossed

Just a little story to give you some hope.

I had giant trance x2 (£1500 )knicked in Middlesbrough last month. It was only 6 months old and not fully covered on the house insurance. It was heartbreaking at the time and if I had caught the little ****ers I couldn’t be held responsible for my actions .Anyway a lot of people told me to check EBay-which to be honest I thought would be a waste of time -why would anyone be that stupid and obvious.
Sure enough 5 weeks later the frame turns up on auction with a 3 day listing with 2 1/2 hours left to go. It was quite obvious it wasn’t a bike person selling and incredibly within 5 miles of my postcode. To cut a long story short police were informed, EBay provided the address. Scum caught red-handed with frame wheels, seat and post plus handle bars.

Moral of the story is - we are all gulity of looking for cheap used parts on Ebay.So can I please just ask that- before you commit to buy- ask yourself .

Is this sale too good to be true?

Am I buying from a genuine biker?

Do the photos look right?

Ask them some simple questions it will soon be obvious if they are genuine.

Check their selling history ?

Do they do local Pickup? Theives dont like visitors.

As a biking community we owe it to each other to keep an eye on the stolen pages and make the effort to catch more of the scum that plague our fabulous sport and hobby and return more bikes to their rightful owners.

As for security I have now invested in an insurance recommended Sold Secure Gold Bike Chain £69
http://www.dooleys-cycles.co.uk/ProductInfo.asp?ProductID=314

And a Squire Sold Secure Gold Ground Anchor sold by Halfords. £44.99

There are insurance companies who will cover you outside the home when your bike is locked with one of these-even on a car rack.

These scum bags are not going to go away because bikes are easy pray so let’s make it hard for them and get yourself covered for the full value of the bike.

FACT- 1200 BIKES STOLEN EVERYDAY IN BRITAIN

What happened to them? (the thieves, not the bike parts!)

cheers larks, gives me a bit of hope - through this forum and bikeradar forum, I have managed to contact a copper in the area who is looking specifically, have chatted to a few local guys who are keeping their eyes open for the bike and it's components. Basically I have done just about everything I can - Can't just sit back and do nothing, I'm very stubburn

Good luck lordmerchant-I'm really gutted for you mate. And gutted that you were only visiting the town it just seems like these bastards are just waiting to pounce when we are least expecting it.
It was good news in my case and to be honest Cleveland Constabulary have been brilliant- they took the theft seriously from the start and when I phoned to report the bike on Ebay they had an address,an arrest warrant and a search warrant within hours.
Your right to keep an eye out for the components - I found out later that the same guy had already sold my forks for £250 on Ebay.He probably could have made £500-£600 on components alone -but he obviously got greedy.
Anyway the bike and parts are still with the Police and as far as i know the guy has been charged with handling stolen goods because they cant prove he was the scum who actually robbed it.So just waiting to hear if the case will go to court.
Chin up bud dont let the bastards get ya down - you will soon feel better when your back in the saddle-where as the scum will always be in gutter.

Just a few tips on keeping your pride and joy a little safer. Probably nothing new, but helps to bring home possibly how insecure your security is.

Lordmerchant, regarding ebay, have you set up searces and saved them to get e-mail alerts? By doing this for the main components, ie frame & forks etc, you shouldn't miss them if they come up. Remember to think about spelling too! They may not be listed correctly.
