Okay guy's it's a long way off, and I am in training for it, but I was wondering, who off the MTBE forums would be up for doing the C2C with me and my brother?

When I say it's a long way off I'm talking 2 years away (max). Will give me time to get my fitness up!!!!

I'm just trying to generate an interest and will place a post when dates are confirmed.

I've never undertook anything like this so if anyone has done it please tell me what it's like!!

Yeah, it is short for Coast to Coast, start on the West coast and ride to the East, but what version are you planning, Whitehaven to Sunderland or the real mans C2C.

May well be up for it!!!!!!

I drove along part of it today, nice cafe between Alston and Penrith at 1903 feet! Loads of cyclists there, think 2 years is optomistic for me though!

Tha cafe you talk about HJ is the Hartside Caf....BIG BIG Biker haunt (motor and pedal) and a wicked sausage butty....Which one's which GUNNER? I know there's 2 versions....the sustrans one (140 ish miles) and the Wainwright one (210 miles).....

The answer Sustrans!!!!

Probably do Workington start and decide where we finish on the fly....might have someone to tag along (in a van/car) and carry gear so we don't have to lug everthing about!!!

Forget about 'The old coach road' or 'Whinlatter forest' I've got the sustrans map and the C2C guide and I've seen the profiles...no no no!!!

Like I say I'm just attracting an interest to see who is 'Up for it' Me and my brother are definitely doing it so the more the merrier!!!

Might be doing this next year:- www.gmbc.co.uk/index.asp again will let people know as time goes by!!

I thought this was going to be the Wainwright one, 210 miles of Hell, lugging all your gear with you Sad Sad Sad

Now that would have been a challenge Wink

Just been reading about it in one of the MTB rags in WH Smiths, the early stages through the Lake District sound mainly unrideable, with lots of pushing and carrying, but the rewards are the views and the isolation I suppose Question

Not slagging the Whitehaven to Sunderland ride off, or bellittling it in any way, but it doesn't really appeal to me as it seems to be predominantly tarmac cycle path or cinder path, with a lack of challenging climbs.

Does anyone disagree?

Fair point Gunner.....I must admit I've got the guide for the Wainwright version and I would love to do it myself as it is an incredible challenge!!! But the sustrans one is a start....

The Wainwright version (loosely) follows the walk which is 190 miles and it goes through some very remote country but can you imagine doing a ride that encompasses:-

The Lakes at the start,
The Pennines in the middle and
The good old NYM for a dramatic finish!!!!

Can you imagine the total ascent figure in that!!!!!!
Can you imagine how long your recovery would be!!!!

Well anyway....Sustrans version first then Wainwright one, maybe the summer after as it takes approx 7 days.

One question though.....Is the Cleveland Way fully rideable or not?

I can't answer your question about the Cleveland Way with any certainty, Denny. I know I have regularly ridden along the section from Clay Bank to Bloworth, without any problem but that is actually designated as a Bridleway on the OS Maps, where as the sections above Carlton and Great Broughton are only designated as footpaths yet I have often seen bikes on those sections.

whether that is what you meant by fully rideable I don't know or do you mean rideable as in terrain wise, if so then that would depend very much on your fitness levels and your technical ability on the bike. For example, the section of path under The Wainstones above Great Broughton is rideable, but unless you have a little bit of leg strength and are good at tight steering and slow speeds, then this section could easily be classed as unrideable by some!!

The thing is my brother was wondering as he said he wouldn't mind riding it....I told him that I think most of it is footpath not bridleway.....I shall peruse the Ordnance Survey Bible chapters 26/27 or in plain speak OS maps OL26/27!

Thanks Gunner.
