Hey all,

After a long MTB lay off I am desperate to get back into it.

One thing I was always lacking was a decent base level of fitness. I only ever managed to get out once or twice a month and a trip out to the local trails (Llandegla) would have me gassed in a matter of 25-30 minutes. I don't have access to a gym as such so was wondering of Spin classes may help?

Why don't you just get out on your bike?

Plan a few local loops of different distances using internet mapping and then record your progress using Strava or similar...

To my mind the best way of building up cycling fitness is to get out cycling to build your fitness!

Any thoughts on that?

Old post, but you know how it is when you have work to do and are avoiding it...........

I agree 100%. Get fitter for cycling by cycling.
Does anyone else find running, or sitting on a stationary bike pedalling and getting nowhere soul-destroying?

As I remember, nothing builds cardiovascular fitness like running.
But go and look at some runners - they're all miserable!

I have a theory that for exercise to do you any good you HAVE to enjoy it.

Which is why I've come back to biking Very Happy

I spin quite regularly and yes it has helped my fitness tremendously, but in a very specific area. I don't feel its affected my long distance endurance, but my short power bursts are stronger and I can sustain them for a lot longer (probably 2 x power for 3 x longer in 6 months spinning once or twice a week).

If you're looking at improving all day riding endurance then your best bet is regular long slow rides, gradually increasing the distance (try to keep your heart rate down in zone 2) before you start working on building power.

I am no expert though, but the above method is working for me, and I have now added a bit of weight training to my routine to improve my core muscles (I get lower back pain when riding all day) and strength/power.

Old post now but I was just browsing through the forum and came across it.

For me the Spartan workout of the day (WOD) is a fantastic way to improve your general fitness. It involves a lot of running and plenty of burpees but it's really helped with my riding as well as my fitness levels.

Take a look on www.spartan.com
search for the Spartan January boot camp, sprint level if you want a good starting marker (it improved my fitness to no end). I now only do the WODs 3 times a week (as well as riding a couple of times a week too) and my fitness is still improving week by week.

Also being as the spartan race is a trail obstacle race you are very encouraged to run on trails which in my mind is a lot more fun than running on the road! And because running is slower than riding I found that I often come across some sweet paths and tracks that I would otherwise miss.
