I have some unwanted wheel movement, it darts to the left under heavy braking then usually moves back to centreish after a few rotations
The front wheel is fixed with a QR skewer which is tight.
Could this be loose wheel bearings? Or something more

Sounds like dodgy bearings to me, if you pick the front of the bike up, grip the wheel and move it side to side there should be no movement, if it does the bearings need looking at.

There's no movement when checking for bearing wear, gonna strip down and replace them to make sure.

Checked those but seem fine, think the bearing race may have collapsed will strip it the weekend and have a look

Take a long hard look at the skewer as well. I had a similar problem on my Camber after I changed tyres from the Captains to something with some grip. The additional grip and braking forces proved too much for the shitty plastic bodied Specialized skewer and the wheel twisted in the forks every time I braked hard. Swapping the skewer to a 20 year old metal bodied Shimano one cured it.
