have any of you ever made diy bike racks to attach to roof bars?
I have 3 kids and can fit the youngests bike in the boot with the seats up but still have 2 adult and 2 24inch wheeled bikes to transport if we want to go somewhere a cycle.
ive looked at tow bar racks for 4 bikes but looking at £170+
cheaper getting roof rack 2nd hand but decent bike carriers x 4 cost a fortune.
so it got me thinking there must be a cheaper option and googled diy bike racks and looks like it can be done.
so if anyone has made one can I see them for inspiration?
thanks Billy

Update*

Bought 2nd hand roof bars for £20
So now I just need 4 bike carriers.
Anyone used the cheap ones from www.roofbox.co.uk. buying 4 they are only £15.95 each.
Bikes will never be out of sight when on car so theft shouldn't be an issue

I can't comment on the bike carriers themselves, but I rate roofbox.co.uk very highly. I've had Thule bars, kayak cradles, locking straps and just now a tow-bar cycle carrier from them and they (as a retailer) have been top notch every time.

I just installed a tow bar on my car on Saturday for mine and Mrs Banana's bikes. Our roof rack is taken up by kayaks, so rather than swapping and changing fittings and only being able to take one or the other on driving holidays, I got a tow bar cycle carrier instead. It's only for 2 bikes though (no mini bananas yet), I can imagine the £££s for a 4-bike model!

I know it's a cliche, but pay what you can afford After your house, your car and your bikes are potentially two of the most expensive material things you own. Take care of them
