Hi everyone. Ive recently replaced my gear cables (inner + outer) and set-up both front and rear mechs to what I thought was pretty much perfect. Then, obviously on my first ride the cables stretched a little and now im getting problems once more.

The most annoying (and possibly dangerous) problem is when i really put my foot down i get chain suck, whereby the chain appears to rap around itself near the front mech.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem?

Thanks guys

Chris

have you checked to make sure none of your teeth are bent? If one of them is catching the chain it'd cause this. If it is just bend it back or file it off.

I can only comment from my own experience, but having many bikes over the years, I have never really experienced cable stretch, certainly not in such a short period.

I have however experienced chain suck, and it can be a real pain, even causing some nasty offs in the worst cases.
Chain suck would nothing to do with your mech. cables stretching, and causing the problem to re-appear.

Can you perhaps be a bit more specific about what is happening, and why it involves your front mech.

Are you sure it is not a "space tolerance" issue with how you have set your mech up.

Here's a link that might help:

Hey guys, thanks for the support.I dot think any of my 'teeth' are bent. What I'll do is go for a short ride tomorrow, hopefully when it does it I'll stop, take a pic and post it here. It's well annoying and yes, could be quite dangerous-it almost flings me forward off the bike!

I'll be in touch!!

Hi people, just thought i'd let everyone know the latest on the dreaded chain suck problem. After having a good look at the condition of teeth i decided to bite the bullet and go and buy a new middle ring - excessive, perhaps? Anyway, I replaced the middle rings (had fun removing the pre-tensioning screw without the right tool!) and now the problem appears to have gone! Feels so good to be able 'put my foot down' without having to be careful about getting chain suck! I will have a proper ride in a couple of days and test it out better....

till then!

Thanks for your help and Gunner, thanks for that link, it really cleared up a few matters and helped me sort this problem. Hopefully, if anyone else suffers from chain suck then they can pick up that link that you potsed to help them out.

Cheers

Chris

I've had chain suck on all my bikes. It happens when the teeth wear, they hook over and look a bit like a shark tooth. I've tried filing the "burrs" off that appear too, but it's the shape of he tooth that affects it, especially when it gets muddy.

Check the condition of your chain too. It is sometimes false economy to not change the chain too.
