I know most of you will think this stuff a bit strange but the website has other gear on aswell. While trying out the Single Speed thing on my steel hardtail I came across this website:

http://www.charliethebikemonger.com

Charlie has a couple of guides about converting normally geared bikes to single speed. He has also emailed me with additional advice and seems a top bloke. Just thought I'd give credit where its due.

yup, but don't ask me why. I haven't thought of a good enough reason yet.

You need to open your mind a bit. Although that kind of attitude is fairly normal until you ride with someone who is a regular singlespeeder.

I refer you to http://mattmagic.com/
Check his riding stats down the side and the bike stats further down.
At a quick glance that's 14000 miles since the beginning of 2007 on various ss wrecks.

I've done 18 months solely on singlespeeds and unless I really want to use the full sus the singlespeed is the bike of choice.

Oh and Jenn nearly (until she got sick near the finish) broke the womans and the ss (mens) record during the GDR this year.

I must add it's not for everyone.

Pedal harder. It's suprising what is possible on a 52" gear.

Or walk :0)

On a slightly different tack, I've got to say that I'd like to give a "fixed" a go, on the road that is, apparently it is just a totally different experience.

Fixed is ace.
Not too keen going through the moors but on the flatter roads around Stokesley it's lovely.
Total opposite to offroad where one gear is far nicer when big hills are involved.

Just selling my fixed road bike to fund a new singlespeed.
Although the wheels will fit the old singlespeed so I still have a road/shop hybrid thing.

Fixed offroad is ace. Must do that again soon.

Yeah, I've read that "Fixed" off road riding is an exhillerating experience, not everyones cup of tea certainly but one of the things that you've got to do at some point in your life.

I know "fixed" is a big way of life in London among cycle couriers, now that would be mad Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
