Do you need brakes on a fixy then?
You must be able to stop with just leg force can you?

well velodrome bike (with fixed gears) you slow down by slowing your pedals down as you said.

not sure about mtb's though. maybe coaster brake Question
although i'd suspect they would have a front brake

sorry not sure if that is a coaster brake could someone corect me if i'm wrong.

///stands up and says to the group

"hello my name's Phil and I own a singlespeed"

Must admit I spend most of my time on the geared bouncy bike but singlespeeds are good once you get used to the climbs or walks as I prefer to call them.

Hi there,
Just chipping in with a biased view... single speed is better than most things, even jam scones. Fixed is a ridiculous and dangerous habit that should be encouraged. You dont NEED brakes, but you will live longer.

We have made a "how to single speed your rubbish, clangy, too expensive, ugly geared bike" movie which addresses many of the techie issues...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93M9lvl8LM8

Sincerely, if anyone needs any fixed of SS info, then please feel free to email me.

You need to open your mind a bit. Although that kind of attitude is fairly normal until you ride with someone who is a regular singlespeeder.
Tom Ive been ridein a singlespeed since 97 Shocked and I have a very open mind Wink Wink

Oh sounds lovely Vern!

That was aimed at Marty BTW not you.
Road/offroad/commuting Kaya?

Fixed without brakes is stupid and illegal (on the public road). Unshipped or snapped chain will lead to a lot of pain. Invaribly this will happen downhill.

Offroad both brakes make steep muddy descending possible/easier on road a back brake isn't really necessary but you may as well have it for emergencies. You can ride 99% of the time without using them but that 1% is when a car pulls out on you and you "really" want to slow down.

I probably have the link but it'll be buried in my favourites.
Magic ratios work for a bit but as soon as the chain wears your back to square one.
A bodged rear mech or singulator work better.

It's not that stupid.

Loads of people don't have brakes. I think that's damn stupid. On the track you aren't allowed brakes but then there aren't any 2 ton killing machines or massive downhills.
