Thinking about going for a blast up Helvellyn sometime in October.

I've never done Helvellyn before, mainly Coniston area and Pooley Bridge end of Ullswater and Haweswater.

What's the best way of doing it in your opinion? I was thinking about parking at Glenridding and going up that way and looking at coming down towards Thirlmere, then picking a route back to Glenridding, possibly taking in Dollywagon Pike and following Grisedale Beck back to Patterdale and Glenridding.

Anyone done this area, rideability of route, possible time scales, ease of route finding, any info greatly appreciated.

I went on the rod from Glenridding, north, then took a left, still on road, towards Dockray. After a bit of road climbing, you come to a T, but off road is straight on. Went up to Great Dodd, then Stybarrow Dodd, Raise, past the way you're thinking of going up. It gets steep, some definite carrying, but not too far. When you get near Helvellyn, the climbing gets easier. Dolywaggon onwards is hardcore - the bit down to Grisedale Tarn was in the process of having loads of stone steps put in - rideable, but only just in some places, many would give it a miss. I liked it, but was off twice. Past the Tarn, it carries on with the same sort of technical challenge - would be graded black for def if it was trail centre. Well above some black stuff. But great fun! I didn't walk any of this, but had the odd dab. Your route takes in all of this, but is probably a better one for the climbing - I reckon I'd do it that way next time. Not sure what the surface is like on the way up that, but I could see it when I passed by - downhill it would be fast but not too tech, prob red if that means anything, so up it just depends how much grip you've got.

Hope this helps.

Cheers for that Orange, I hadn't considered going up to Dockray then across Matterdale Common and Stybarrow Dodd. I was thinking of going straight up from Glenridding up Greenside Road but was wondering if it might all be over too quick if I did that. Therefore your option has given me some serious food for thought and probably a chance that if I did that route then there'd be the oppurtunity for more great photo oppurtunity's.
