Are they avid 5 or 7 or Shimano.

Have you adjusted dial on the brake housing itself which pushes one of the pads, usually the inner one up close to the rotor.

You could try it,at the end of the day all it will cost you is a replacement rotor if it goes tits up!!

Certainly looks bent to me.

I'd just send the bike back and get a replacement, stuff like brakes should all be set up to go on arrival ypu shouldn't have to be messing about with them.

Personally for an 8 speed bike I woudn't go to all the expense for the range of riding you are doing just stick with the current gears you've got and use the ones you need.
