I'd take shimano brakes over hope all day long.

Even the basic Deores with decent rotors and pads are plenty of brake for anyone.

There's also probably a little bit of "Who you know" aswell as what you know. Same with everything. Just make yourself scene/heard. If you're good enough the attention will come to you.

You could probably pick up a second hand giant trance for around 700, but ofcourse buying used has it's perks n drawbacks, nothing wrong the canzoo, just see if you can become chummy with a good LBS, ...
