I can't get on with that wet lube either, to me it seems to act like a magnet for dust and mud.

You should be able to reuse the links, but I don't think its worth trying with the pin. I always use these, and have never had any problems.

I think you need to shake it about a bit more. Fill it full of air and spend a good quarter of an hour shaking it.
