Got some Shimano XT shifters on the way. Just wondering if people run their Shimano Shifters with the gear displays or not.

Never had mine on, not even to see what they look like. I don't need a little window that tells me bugger all to see what gear i'm in.

The only point I can see to them is to show other people you are running XT shifters.

Got SLX shifters and ran with the window for a while to 'get used' to the feel of what gears are where.
Once I removed em though and fitted the little blanking plate I've found I've got more room and it is now perfectly set up for one finger braking, after I swapped the brakes and shifters over.

Took em off when I ran XT. Now run XTR which doesn't have them anyway.

Without meaning to Hijack this thread.. but the whole removing of shifter displays? is this something that is only possible with 1 or 2 makes, or can most shifters be taken apart this way?

As far as I know on the Shimano shifters it is only SLX upwards where you can do this. No idea on Sram etc.

Get shot of them, you should pretty much know what gear you are in without having to look at a crappy view glass on the handlebars

I used them without the windows, it just cleans up the bars and gives you more room to get your brakes in the perfect position.
