Okay I tried this for the first time and believe me it ain't easy. A lot of patience is required as you probably won't get it first time, here's an explanation on how I did it.

Tools needed :- Spoke tool
Truing stand or bike frame (not as accurate)
A lot of patience

Time taken :- Minutes to hours (I took about an hour)

As I don't own a truing stand I decided to improvise, I took the tyre off and dropped the wheel back into the frame and give it a spin and true to form there was a slight kink in the rim.

After a lot of "wondering what the hell to do" I decided to have a look at my Haynes manual....result it tells you how to do it...my method too!

Basically you spin your wheel and whichever way it kinks you tighten up the spokes on the opposite side e.g. If it kinks to the right tighten the left side spokes, you also need to slacken the spokes on the same side as the kink (the right in this example).

Now I'm not the most patient person but a bit of persistence and a bit of logical thinking will crack it, also a keen eye. Now you may not get it perfect but that's okay as the method described is basically to get you home (unless the wheel resembles a taco!!). Now I got my wheel basically back in shape, it's still got a little kink in it but it's not as bad as it was which means I can live with it!

The alternative...get your LBS to do it for you!!!! Wink

Yup found out the hard way...but at least if it happens on a ride I'll know I can sort it enough to get me home.

I couldn't agree more Gunner...I only did it to see if I could do it...as it turns out if I had the proper equipment I probably could do it. As it stands the one I did is not bad put not perfect so it's going in the LBS to get sorted properly. I will be investing in a truing stand though! It's easy enough you just need patience.
