Turned up at the trail centre today and realised I had forgotten my helmet!. I had to decide to do a 1hr round trip to get it, cancel my ride or ride without. I decided to have a very gentle bimble without but did feel uneasy with my choice (kept thinking about big al) and self concious passing other riders who all had one on. Was I stupid, have others done this?

I was wearing helmet and still got a face full of a tree. I wouldn't go out without one and now have a choice of normal cycle helmet or full face.

Never used one, never needed one, never bothered me, i'm typical 'old school' ....

However, I got to admit i'm coming around to the idea recently along with elbow and knee pads, but it will be a fullface one. You lot are a bad influence on me.

If i drove an hour or more to get to a trail centre and had forgotten my lid i would ride but i wouldnt ride anythin other than fireroads or the blue if i knew it to be a proper pansy type blue and stay off anything that requires more than the most basic of skills. although i do know thats naughty. Just bein honest.

The last time I rode without a helmet I knocked out 4 teeth, had ten stitches in my eye, broke my nose and had scrapes all over my face - i'm not convinced a helmet would have prevented all my injuries as the most impact was on my mouth.I wouldn't ever ride without one again though.
I voted no.

I forgot my spine protector the other week while riding DH

Felt a bit weird at first, but then after 1 run or so I totally forgot about it and rode the fastest that i'd done for a while Confused

Fullface for me, unless pottering along the towpaths, I wouldn't go on a group ride without one.

We had a teacher at my old shool who always rode to work/school with out a helmet. one day he got to close to the kerb and you all know how once your on it you cant get off easily...well it had him off, he bashed his head on the kerb, 4 hours later he was dead.

point is he was only "pottering" Never go with out your skid lid EVER Exclamation

Would I ride without a helmet? No... not even to the shop.

I wince when I see people on the trails without them, especially when it's dads not wearing them, but they make their kids wear one Confused

I go apeshit when I see my kids out without theirs, especially when they're at the local skate park on their scooters or BMX... Absolutely apeshit...

Yeh, i see that often. mom / dad with no helmet. Kids are all full faced with all pads and everything, only thing missing is the bubblewrap.

But I see everyones point, I suppose I just been lucky so far.

Wear a lid when I'm MTBing but not on the road bike.

Might get a road lid. I think it's compulsory if you enter events.

Don't know why I wear a lid at all though. Never had them when we were kids and I'm still here. I've also never heard of a cycling death where a lack of helmet was the cause. I'm sure there are cases but very rarely.
Where do you draw the line?
As was said, BigAl had a lid on.
Should we all be wearing body armour and a full face to go to the shops?

If you're that worried about getting hurt, don't ride a bike.
